Marty Stempfle was my first supervisor when I arrived at the 1st Comm in 1979. He helped out a lot of "mobsters" with issues on the local economy. For example, he translated German "insurance speak" for me and many others when obtaining car insurance at a local Wiesbaden insurance agency. He was a German citizen who emigrated to the U.S. in the late 1950s-early 1960s. Almost immediately after getting his resident visa, he was drafted, but wound up in the Air Force, where he stayed until retirement. I believe he spent much of his career back in Germany. He built a house for his family in Fulda, near the East German border, and every Friday afternoon, the "Fulda Express", in his pristine U.S. Ford Granada, hit the road for points east. He was a fine NCO--one from whom I learned a lot. - Larry Grinnell |
